They are there to aid the Dovahkiin in their journey. They rarely ever fight, but have mastery over most Shouts.
Dovahkiin [5/20]
These guys/girls hold the Dragonblood in their veins. Three of them were chosen by the prophecy to be the ones to finally rid the world of Alduin for good. The rest of them can do a number of things, including help the chosen three on their journey.
Children of Alduin

This group is with Alduin. Nidhug and the Children of Alduin wish to see the World-Eater destroy the world.
Alduin's Bane
(See here for details)
Alduin's Bane is a Draugr only cult that wishes to help the chosen three destroy Alduin by taking out the Children of Alduin.
Thalmor
The goal of the Thalmor is to route out Talos worship and make Skyrim fully submit to the Almeri Dominion.
Blades
This group is dedicated to helping the Dovahkiin and killing all the dragons. Also, they are against the Thalmor and would like nothing more than to see them fall.
Black-Skull Bandits
The Black-Skull Bandits do exactly what bandits do; rape, ravage, and pillage all in the name of turning a profit. They will also be stealing things of value from the other factions.
Blueheart Marauders
Currently residing inside Broken Oar Grotto this clan of pirates is well known throughout the oceans of Skyrim. Keeping their identity a secret is key to their success. The clan has limited rules and will do almost anything for Septims, including land based jobs.
Bard's College
They sing songs about the world around them. They one day hope to find the last copy of "King Olaf's Verse."
College of Winterhold
The College of Winterhold's main objective is gather many magical artifacts and eventually raise Winterhold from the Sea of Ghosts and re-build it. That, and Arch-Mage Annalynn intends to re-build the College's standing in Skyrim.
Stormcloaks
The rebellion in charge of chasing the Empire and the Thalmor out of Skyrim. They, like the Legion, wish to obtain the Jagged Crown.
Imperial Legion
Here to enforce the new laws since the Aldmeri takeover. They wish to vanquish the rebellion and get their hands on the Jagged Crown.
Companions
Aside from doing the jobs the are contracted to do, this group wishes to one day destroy the Silver Hand and gather all the shards of Wuuthrad.
The Dark Brotherhood
While they kill people for the right price, their main goal is to eventually refurbish the Dawnstar Sanctuary and kill the Emperor Tidus Mede II.
The Thieves Guild
They want rebuild the Guild back to its former glory by reinstating their footholds in each of the nine holds of Skyrim, as well as collect several larceny targets from different places.
